How to finish your timber to look rich and natural
Once you have stripped the old coatings and prepared your woodwork for finishing, what do you finish it with? If you have prepared your wood with The Coopers Restoration System then you are probably thinking that wood is too good to just paint over it again.
If you want a vibrant natural look (i.e. non glossy) then there is one amazing product you must consider. It’s called Moisturising and it’s also developed by the clever people at Coopers Restoration. In our evaluation it out performs polyurethane, waxes and oils easily, both for looks and longevity. Here are some of its advantages:
- It has a lasting natural look that won’t yellow.
- It’s very easy to apply and you can finish sections of your project as you strip.
- It holds its value. With simple maintenance it will last the life of the timber and you will never need to strip it back again.
- It is not skin forming, it will not crack, peel or flake.
- When you touch the surface you’re actually feeling the wood and the silky smooth timber grain.
- It absorbs deep into the timber and nourishes the grain. It never dries out so the wood is unlikely to split or crack.
- It is suited for all interior joinery, furniture and boat cabins. Ideal for windows as it stands up to the harsh UV sunlight rays.
- You can use it on floors and its even suited for heavy traffic such as bars and cafes.
- It’s non toxic and comfortable to work with. Most partners are willing to help with this part of the project.
- Its cost per completed square metre is very price competitive even with low cost polyurethane.
- Suited for both new wood and freshly stripped wood.
Are there any short comings?
- It can be used outside but the maintenance becomes higher. Front doors need to be cleaned and wiped over about every 3 months.
- People use it on house exteriors but you need to properly wash the house and possibly reapply a light coat every year.
- Its unsuitable (in our opinion) for out door furniture. On flat surfaces the Moisturiser migrates out with sun and rain.
- Interior surfaces such as tables can watermark, but the marks are easily removed. This may be a feature to some people and not a short coming. You can also treat timber not to watermark.
Cooper’s Moisturiser is supplied as a finishing system in a pack with the main items you need.
