A quality heat gun can save money

This is the best heat gun we have trialled. In our tests we found most heat guns inefficient, disappointingly slow and tiring to use. This Makita electronic temperature controlled model is a standout winner.

Heat guns are often very effective at removing oil based paint. Unfortunately you cannot really tell how effective they will be on your project until you have a go. Some paints heat gun brilliantly while others are sticky and difficult to do. This gun gets the air temperature just right letting you work with speed and confidence.

In addition to the heat gun you also need a 50mm flexible bladed broadknife. Select the one below. Never use an ordinary broadknife – even if it looks similar as you’ll likely mark the wood and have to sand.

Please note:

• Water based paints and varnishes won’t heat gun.
• If heat gunning lead based paint, read and follow the health and safety guides.
• Some paints are easier to heat gun than others. If the paint is thick then you can save a lot of paint stripper by heat gunning first.
• Heat gunning is not a complete paint stripping solution. You still have to strip the residue that remains – but that is usually easy.
