Masking tape to use with paint stripper

Paint stripper loves to eat through masking tape. Most tapes become a gluey mess as the paint stripper soaks through the tape and dissolves the adhesive. Before you know it, the surface you’re trying to protect is being attacked and the masking tape has gone soft.

We have been unable to find the perfect tape but some are much better than others. We think this tape is best currently available. Please note that there are several blue coloured tapes on the market. They are not the same. In fact one type of blue tape we tested we rank the worst tape for use with paint strippers.

This tape has 60 day safe release properties. Normally you will need two or three layers of it to give you suitable protection. Please refer to our masking tape know how section for great tips on masking.

Usage guidelines
One roll of masking tape will do approximately:
  • 1 – 2 window surrounds
  • 2 door surrounds
  • Skirting for 1 average room (i.e. around the top of the skirting – double the quantity if protecting the floor as well)
Notes:
Never leave paint stripper to pond on tape – wipe it away as it will seep through with time.

If you want to try your own masking tape, test it by applying some to a clean piece of painted scrap wood, apply paint stripper liberally to it and check after 10 – 30 minutes. Peel the tape back and see if the surface underneath is still intact and dry.
