The joinery in this hallway at the top of these stairs is all Kauri. Built around 1900 all these fixtures have been restored using the Coopers Restoration System and finished with Coopers Moisturiser. Note how detailed the woodwork is and how well it all ended up.
The original coating was Shellac, a common wood finish on Kauri of that period. A nice thing about Shellac is it dissolves easily with the Cooper's system and is usually much easier to restore than a painted surface. Impressively the dark old colour stripped consistently as the original stains were mixed in the shellac coating and not applied direct to the wood. This is often the case and stripped with a gentle system like Coopers it leaves a beautiful patina that would have been damaged if sanded or scraped.
