What coatings can you heat gun?
These coatings can generally be heat gunned successfully
- Oil and enamel based paint (old paints)
- Lead based paint (however lead paint is poisonous and safety precautions are critical)
- Paint on old shellac varnish - very successful
- Acrylic paint on enamel paint - sometimes
What coatings won’t heat gun?
Water based paint or acrylic paints. If there are old enamel based paints underneath, heat gunning may be possible.
Polyurethane, varnish and old shellac.
Waxed, oiled or stained timber.
It is not always obvious if paint is acrylic or enamel. If in doubt, give it a go in some inconspicious area.
